Chillarium Online : Session 2
SpacesoundS

Week 1

1. Neon Indian - Baby's Eyes

"Wow, I was surprisingly stuck between Baby’s Eyes by Neon Indian and Little Dark Age by MGMT. I immediately thought of the two. The image is giving dreamscapes from an image created on an 80s Mac Apple computer. I love it so much. I’m gonna have to choose Baby’s Eyes by Neon Indian."- Alyssa

2. FM Skyline - Sonic in the Holobeach

"The photo reminds me of some AI dream of a hotel pool, retro future, very unreal. This song would be perfect for kicking back in that pool on a butt load of ketamine."- Brian

3. Emmit Fenn - The Chase

"This song makes me think of a futuristic movie that feels ominous and bright all the same."- Wesso

4. Saint Pepsi - Dawson's Creek
(YouTube only. Link)

"Every time I see a space like this, I either think of what I thought Regency Square used to look like when it was an active and vibrant mall and/or vaporwave.
This record was my first foray into that sound and I've been hooked ever since."
- nickfresh

5. Ghostland Observatory - Sad Sad City

"The photo is much more of a vapor wave type feel than the song is, but I think the song goes with it in a way that shows how eerie or depressing something made for people to use can appear when it’s unused. The neon lights, the pool, all sitting unused as if it’s been there for some time, forgotten or at least pushed aside for the realities of life."- Seabream

6. Chrome Canyon - Elemental Themes

"I cannot see purple neon like that and not think of chrome canyon"- Matt

7. Glass Cassette - Bungee Jumper

- Jason

8. Casiopea - Sunnyside Feelin' (サニーサイド・フィーリン)

"I think I've got to go with Casiopea. Makes me think of people in a mall in the 80's with big hair and big shoulder pads."- Chris

9. Bossie - Tell It All

"Great pic! Seems like a dying mall, just sort of hanging on. The lights are on but there’s nobody left inside.
Made me think of this 80s-inspired track."
- mew

10. Iden Kai - Shall We Dance?

- Parenttrapfan

11. SEGA SOUND TEAM - Tidal Tempest

"I’m not a big game soundtrack guy but this image reminded me of Sonic CD, and after wrestling with the idea of posting a Greenskeepers song but not being able to really nail down the right one I visited the game ost and thought this was actually pretty alright. Each course on the game has like three alternate aesthetic versions of itself with accompanying soundtrack remixes as you jump between. It was a pretty creative game that I don’t feel like a ton of ppl played."- Hogshaker

12. Mother Mother - Body

"Reminded me of Fear Street 1978 and 80s mall horror"- Albrista

13. Cautious Clay - Cold War

"I chose this song because to me, it's about closing the space between you and someone else. And it'd be sick to hear it in the room in the picture."- George

14. Part Time - Thunderbolts of Love

- ALFC

15. CAPSULE - I wish You

- Ella

16. Machine Girl - The Storm

"this song is like chill blue water vibe"- ktmelon

17. J Dilla - Think Twice

- Benjamin

18. M83 - Midnight City

- Dale

19. Macintosh Plus - Lisa Frank 420 / Modern Computing (リサフランク420 / 現代のコンピュー)(YouTube only. Link)

"I feel like this is such a vaporware image, that I had to go with the classic vaporware song, Macintosh Plus. I feel like that's a song you'd hear in the vaporware world's top mall where everyone wears roller skates and dresses like a disco poser from the 80s. All the computers run on Windows 98 and XP, all the Macs are stuck on OS 9, and the Gameboy is the hottest hand held gaming device out."- evan

20. Domenique Dumont - Sans cesse, mon chéri

"Idk what this place is but it says quirky French decadence to me. I wanna drink champagne and smoke cigarettes in that pool while this song bounces off the tile."- QD

Week 2

21. Wand - M.E.

"Isolation theme and a kind of heavier, distant sound fit this image imho. The pic made me think of old Soviet architecture (besides the sleek staircase), maybe it’s an elaborate bunker. Or a repurposed missile silo?"- Hogshaker

22. Protomartyr - Worm In Heaven

"The brutalist architecture and stairwell fits with the band’s general tension building, though this song is missing that. The song is about a man seemingly getting into heaven by the skin of his teeth and still carrying the weight of his time on earth with him."- Seabream

23. Hundred Waters - Murmurs

"Something very alien, feminine, and ascending about this one!!"- Brian

24. alt-J - Deadcrush

"This one was a bit difficult. I wanted something modern, repetitive, echoey, but also something creeping and slightly uncomfortable."- Chris

25. Tropidelic - basement floor

- George

26. altopalo - wya?
(not on Apple Music. Link)

- Jason

27. Aphex Twin - Xtal

"I am gonna go with a classic and pick Xtal by Aphex Twin. I feel like they could totally make this noise naturally in this environment. It just feels right."- Alyssa

28. Funkadelic - Atmosphere

"this one makes me feel like I’m in the middle of climbing a long and winding spiral staircase of a spooky castle. will I get there before my armor becomes too heavy and my legs give out? or will I just change my mind altogether and start the arduous trek of getting back to ground level? girl idk.naturally, my choice for this journey is this curious tune called “atmosphere” by Funkadelic. Also, George Clinton on it being obscene haha. rest in peace bernie worrell."- nickfresh

29. Grouper - Alien Observer

"I’m going to go with Alien Observer by Grouper. Those stairs could lead to underground tunnels or up to the main deck of a spaceship. Kinda hope it’s the latter. I need a break from this planet."- ALFC

30. Plaid - Air Locked

"The song has a sort of echoing that I think would reverberate beautifully in the stairwell"- mew

31. Shiny Toy Guns - Don't Cry Out

(,:- Parenttrapfan

32. James Blake & Lil Yachty - In Grey

"The song speaks for itself"- Wesso

33. Jerry Garcia - The Wheel

- Matt

34. Thom Yorke - Traffic

"These both feel slightly ominous, cold, and modern yet old"- Dale

35. David Bowie - Subterraneans

- Ben

36. Daft Punk - Voyager

"Got the feeling of outer space, coming out from the dark and Discovery."- Albrista

37. El Guincho - Bombay

"This picture reminds me of a place that would remind you of your ex every time you pass it. Like it’s the stairwell where you used to meet to kiss and talk after school or after work but then you had a bad break up, a real heartbreak, and it’s no long the place that gives you butterflies, but the place that drops your stomach to the floor. This song takes place shortly before that breakup."- Ella

38. Molchat Doma - Bedpan (Boris Ryzhy) (Судно (Борис Рижий))

"The brutalist structure of the image reminded me of the album art and general vibe of this song, and a lot of molchat doma's music."- evan

39. Twin Shadow - Forget

"i feel like i’d be walking up these stairs in a movie at the most pivotal point. so dramatic but also calm and liminal"- ktmelon

40. SebastiAn - Thirst

"The synth here sounds like brutalist architecture looks. This song has a feeling of being surrounded by concrete but it also has that hopefulness to it, like ascending into the light of the open world. I read the lyrics for the first time the other day and they reflect pretty much that exactly so tip of the hat to SebastiAn for nailing the whole vibe."- QD

Week 3

41. Nmesh - Climbing the Corporate Ladder

"I am going to choose the song Climbing the Corporate Ladder by Nmesh. An artist who over stimulates your brain in a way that an alley, stacked full of plugged in tvs would. Nmesh takes random samples from the past and creates his own unique sound."- Alyssa

42. The 1975 - If You're Too Shy (Let Me Know)

"This was a hard one because I’ve really been digging into another 80s binge lately. I liked this tune right away for the correlation of what I see as an 80s nostalgic image, but the fact that this song was released in 2020, and the lead singer is talking about seeing his muse “online” and sees her everywhere."- Wesso

43. Azealia Banks - Soda

"This weeks photo says to me: searching aimlessly. Like trying everything and nothing fills ur void. A disorienting dead end of endless possibilities."- Ella

44. Toro y Moi & ABRA - Miss Me

- Jason

45. Health - We Are Water

"The first thing I thought of when I saw that picture was We are Water by Health. Sooooo…sorry about that! 😆"- ALFC

46. Nala Sinephro - Space 1

"This song is super minimal, but I feel like its perfect for this after hours "closed" vibe. "- Brian

47. Yinka - Failing

- George

48. Journey - Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)

"This reminded me of the scene in Tron legacy when Jeff bridge's kid goes in the arcade and this is the song that was playing."- evan

49. The Whitest Boy Alive - Island

"Pulsing, colorful, layered, reflective."- Chris

50. Carpenter Brut - L.A. Venice Bitch 80's

" This is the kind of vintage video game electronic vibe I get from all the stacked crt tvs"- Dale

51. Kraftwerk - Pocket Calculator

- Matt

52. The Other People Place - It's Your Love

- nickfresh

53. David Byrne & St. Vincent - I Should Watch TV

"I chose this for maybe super obvious reasons. Hoping nobody else did too, lol."- Hogshaker

54. Mark Ronson & The Business Intl - Circuit Breaker

- Albrista

55. Tigercub - Up In Smoke

"This is a great song. The song itself mentions a television which is a bit on the nose. But I love the soft vocal. The whole thing really captures the fuzzy feeling from touching big outdated tv screens and their warm glow"- mew

56. Gorillaz - Controllah (feat. MC Bin Laden)

- Parenttrapfan

57. The Comet is Coming - Closing Credits

- Seabream

58. Bladee - Unreal

- ktmelon

59. Aseul - Always With You

"This song and picture both evoke a feeling of being in a dream. The song is about someone seeing through your worldly facade and into your core. To me that labyrinth of TVs pairs with that feeling of trying to figure someone out. Searching through looking for a clear image, finding mostly colors instead."- QD

Week 4

60. Ugly Duckling - Lay It On Ya

"Had a memory about a bodega in Chicago I used to frequent and the reason I kept going back is that they always had the best, most obscure hip hop playing on a nice boombox, maybe the nicest thing in the store."- Wesso

61. Doechii - STANKA POOH

"This photo is two vibes in one...It's a rough corner store with a cerebral sunset. That's what this beat is to me"- Brian

62. RIVKA - Swim High

"I immediately thought of this song called Swim High by RIVKA. Dreamy sunset vibes."- Alyssa

63. Frankie Ruiz - Desnúdate Mujer

"Reminds me of a bodega in New York. and now, all I want is a big bag of Wise BBQ chips and a bottle of strawberry Crush."- nickfresh

64. Bon Iver - 29 #Strafford APTS

"This song by Bon Iver has always struck me with a tineless quality, but in a down to Earth, very average sort of way. That’s where my mind goes from this image."- Chris

65. Vincent Mango - Mint Leaf

"Whenever I go to the variety store I still think about buying a pack of cigarettes. And so a nice long song that complements that feeling, ha!This song is pretty long and has a sort of end-of-day long sunset feeling to it, too.:)"- mew

66. Calexico - Minas de Cobre

"This reminded me of driving through the southwest, pit stopping at gas stations and quik E markets then getting back on the highway to watch the desert change color in the sunset. Nostalgic and corny but beautiful, just like Minas de Cobre by Calexico."- ALFC

67. Jaubi - Her Smile Made Me Smile

- Matt

68. Rik Schaffer - Come Around

- evan

69. Paramore - (One of Those) Crazy Girls

"No idea why, but this is what popped into my head first. Enjoy lol."- George

70. Wavves - Green Eyes

"i chose this song because it’s in GTA5 and i love to drive along to it, the gas station reminds me of the ones you can rob and also buy snacks from. the song is pretty but it’s twisted too. just like me playing the game :)"- ktmelon

71. Limbeck - Watchin' the Moon Rise Over Town

"This picture reminds me of being in my 20s and loving this band"- Jason

72. The Radio Dept. - Domestic Scene

"I don’t know why but I interpreted this as seeing the sun coming up (not setting) from a convenience store, which reminds of of being up all night and realizing that whatever experience you had wasn’t what you were hoping for which matches the wistful questioning vibe of this track."- Dale

73. La Bouche - Be My Lover

“We loved us some House music and Arizona tea in Elementary school”- Albrista

74. Ollie Lewin - Mesh

- Seabream

75. Lorde - Buzzcut Season

- Parenttrapfan

76. Young Thug - Family Don't Matter (feat. Millie Go Lightly)

“Pullin up at the corner store for a blunt wrap and an Arizona. You step out through the propped open door and catch the beautiful southern sunset, the hot breeze fanning your flames. You descend into the night to complete your mission.”- Ella

77. Beck - Que' Onda Guero

"Little jingle when you walk into a corner store heavily featured on this track"- Hogshaker

78. J Dilla - Hi.

- Ben

79. Deb Never & Jim-E Stack - Sweet & Spice

"This photo feels like a memory of a special night with a new love. "...let's run away. It doesn't matter where we go" type vibes when you're newly infatuated. I feel like this snack stop sunset is the kind of image to stick with you from an evening like that. - QD

Chillarium Online : Session 1
Step Into the Chillarium

1. Cid Rim - Behind the Sun

"This song has a lot of fun textures, timbres, and rhythms to play off of. Those reasons and the fact that it’s just fun and dope made it my choice to get this thang started."- Quinn

2. STRFKR - Isabella of Castile

"Repetitive, electronic, soft but high singing. Subdued energetic"- Chris

3. Pink Floyd - Marooned

"The descending three chords might be the same, they’re at least close. And that synth line really reminded me of some nasty slide guitar. Dave gilmour rips."- Matt

4. Frank Ocean - Pink Matter

"It felt like this song came from the same dimension as the previous song"- Jason

5. Men I Trust - Show Me How

"It's like the bass guitar from Pink Matter goes on to have it's own song where it's the lead"- Brian

6. Yaya Bey - keisha

"Here she is…"- Ben

7. Jessie Ware - Mirage (Don't Stop)

"I love the resemblance of the dance style that came from Keisha. This track kind of mirrors that with a little more repetition. I also can’t get enough of the bass line which was also very present and upfront in th[e mix]"- Josh

8. Bells Atlas - Hazelwood

"The funky active drumbeat and bass lines connected me between the prompt and my response"- Dale

9. Solange feat. Lil Wayne - Mad

- Ben

10. MILLIC feat. ((( O ))) - Can't Wait

"That piano R&B vibe with a sense of space"- Quinn

11. Ali Shaheed Muhammad & Adrian Younge - Don't Keep Me Waiting

- Dale

12. DANGERDOOM - Basket Case

"It’s the marimba or whatever"- Matt

13. Gnarls Barkley - Who’s Gonna Save My Soul

"I love Basket Case as it is from my favorite DOOM record, but I wanted to steer it away from hip hop a bit. Danger Mouse, the producer of DANGERDOOM, is also the Gnarls Barkley producer, so it has a similar feel"- Jason

14. Marvin Gaye - Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)

"Love this song and hope everyone else does too. It has a similar vibe as that Gnarls Barkley track. I picked it for that reason but also because it has a similar feel/vibe."- Josh

15. Bon Iver - Faith

- Chris

16. Dijon - Big Mike’s

"I hope the ambient texturey nature of this one doesn’t throw off the vibes."- Brian

17. Khruangbin & Leon Bridges - Chocolate Hills

- Matt

18. UGK - Good Stuff

- Ben

19. Parliament - P-Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up)

- Dale

20. Jamiroquai - Cosmic Girl

- Chris

22. Charlotte Day Wilson feat. BADBADNOTGOOD - I Can Only Whisper

"A different genre, but similar melodic style and mood."- Brian

23. Amy Winehouse - You Know I’m No Good

"Yooooo"- Jason

24. Warpaint - New Song

"I ended up sticking with a female artist here. Or a band of them. Killer group who I'm sure you know but absolutely love this track. Truly rocks and even has a bit of a pop element too."- Josh
